Early Settlers - North Norwich

Early settlers in the Town of No. Norwich (#10) of Original Twenty Towns taken from "History of Chenango & Madison Counties, NY" by James H Smith; pub. 1880. Tried to use year, where stated, person and where they were from.

North Norwich was formed from Norwich, April 7, 1849. 1794 first settlements mad by some eight or nine persons from Nine Partners, Dutchess Co., who purchased the 10th township, or large portions of it, and for whom it was surveyed and divided by Captain John HARRIS, a pioneer settler.

Among these were:
Jonathan DAN supposed to be first settler
(French's Gazatteer says Joseph LATHROP and A MEAD made first settlement on lot 1, in 1794)

Jacob GROW, later moved to Polkville, in town of Norwich,
Jonathan MEAD; after 1816 moved to Marcellus,
Jonah POYER,
Abram and Edward PerLEE and
Isaac BOCKEE.

Jeremiah and Abner PURDY; Jeremiah was in Sherburne
Israel FERRIS, brother of Benjamin Ferris in Sherburne
Ebenezer HARTWELL, Dutchess Co. and
Judge Joel THOMPSON, Dutchess Co.; was in Sherburne
Abner PURDY, native of Horse Neck, near Salem, Westchester Co., came from Dutchess Co
