I have just learned my ggggrandfather, Jeremiah TREMAIN b 1785 NY was the oldest son (and oldest child?) of Daniel TREMAIN and Mary VAN DEUSEN of Brisben, NY. After Mary, his mother, died, Jeremiah moved with his wife, Rachel and his 3 youngest sisters to Coitsville, Trumbull Co, OH. He sold land there in 1828 and moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co (later Lake Co), Ohio. Jeremiah and Rachel TREMAIN are buried in the Kirtland Mormon Temple Cemetery, Kirtland, Lake Co, OH. Also buried in his plot is his daughter, Silala TRUMAN who died 18 Feb 1857. She is my g-g-grandmother, the wife of Wilson WOODARD. Her sister, Sabra LONG, wife of Isaac W. LONG is also buried there with her husband and two of their daughters. Silala TRUMAN was the mother of 8 or 9 children and she died at about age 37 probably during childbirth. My gr-grandmother, Octalana WOODARD-CARTER b 1845 was her oldest daughter.
Daniel TREMAIN and his wife Mary VAN DEUSEN apparently owned land in Brisben, Chenango County, NY. I would like to find how many children they had. I think only the oldest son, Jeremiah TREMAIN left NY with his wife, Rachel, and his 3 youngest sisters to live in Coitsville, Trumbull Co, Ohio. He sold that land in 1828 and moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co, (later Lake co) Ohio. I believe my gggrandmother, Silala TRUMAN was one of Jeremiah's daughters. She married Wilson WOODARD in 1842 in Geauga Co, Ohio and had 8 or 9 children and died in 1857 at age 37.

If you have any information about this family, please contact me: Mary Kay Ward, 1432 Yeardley Drive, Richmond, Virginia 23225-2906; Phone: 804-232-9338.

Byrne Stoddard Sun Jan 21 22:38:11 2001
Searching for Zophar Curtiss STODDARD b. 1773 Woodbury, CT, son of David Stoddard, b. 1738. Zophar probably went by middle name, Curtis, spelled variously with one or two Ls. US Census indexes for 1820 lists a Curtis in Coventry Twp. 1810 Census lists David STODDARD in Chenango County, but no twp shown.

Curtis had an older brother David, and his father was a David, so it's possible the two brothers settled here. Curtiss also had an older brother Nathan, close to his age. Nathan is listed in the 1820 and 1830 Censuses as living in New Lebanon, Columbia County. Possible these siblings came as a group to the region.

Zophar Curtiss appears briefly in the New Haven CT census with wife and two young kids, then disappears entirely. Death certificates of his grandchildren state their parents were born in NY, but do not specify where. Zophar vanishes from sight after New Haven census entry. We believe he probably went to NY State.

It is clear from the surnames in these counties that numerous Conn. families migrated here 1780-1820, with some of them refusing to leave the old home towns behind, and naming their new abodes after the ones they vacated -- Guilford, Coventry, Lebanon, etc.

Any help birth, marriage, death, property, etc. records on this group would be deeply appreciated. Have been on him 10 months and getting increasingly dismayed.
Byrne Stoddard - Guilford, CT

I've just discovered from a death record (d 17 Nov 1906) that my great great grandfather William YOUNG was most likely living in Bainbridge in Chenango Co., where he died. The 13 Feb 1836 date was birth date of his wife Elizabeth. According to death registry cert. I just received, he was buried in Bainbridge. Since not in Greenlawn Cem., maybe in other nearby cem.
Would someone be able to check the 1900 cenus for me, and also, if possible, 1880 and 1890.
Names of William's children were John (prob. not with them since married to Susan in 1878), Martha, William James, Rachel(witness to John's marriage in NYC 1878), George Thomas (m. Achsa in 1899, then lived in Windsor, NY), Jane Elizabeth, Thomas Alexander, Richard David, Charles Francis and Samuel, all born before 1880.
Would anyone be able to help? - Ray.

I am looking for ancestors and siblings of my 2G grandmother Louisa (POPE) POLLEY. She married Silas POLLEY b. 1837 in Cortland Co. in Beloit WI in 1864 while he was on furlough from the Civil War. They resided in Freeport, IL after the war until his death in 1890. Their marriage certificate listed her parents as H.G. GATES and Susannah. I have reason to believe that her father's name might actually have been Horatio Gates POPE. Louisa's obit stated she was born in NY abt. 1841. I have found a Horatio Gates POPE who was a son of Gates POPE of Chenango Co. (there was a mention of Burlington which I understand is no longer in Chenango Co.). This family descended from Revolutionary War captain Gershom POPE.
Any information on this POPE family would be appreciated. Thanks. Barbara

I'm trying to discover information about my SHAW roots and how they got to this country. My g-g-grandfather, Denison Henry SHAW, was born February 8, 1813 in Chenango County (according to my grandmother). He moved to Cincinnati, Ohio approximately 1830. At this time, it is unknown to me who the father and mother of Denison is, if he had siblings, and if any of the family moved with him to Cincinnati.
I got from my grandmother that Denison's father immigrated from Scotland around 1800 and settled in the east-central part of New York State. I hope the scant information will ring a bell.

Diana Hastings Groome Tue Jan 30 14:33:32 2001
I had a cousin who began my family history, she passed away but before doing so about 11 years ago gave me the information she had so far. I can't seem to locate any of them in your records listed anywhere on your sites. According to her records many of them lived in Smithville Flats, NY (near Oxford), Chenango County and buried in Oxford Cemetery or Wain Len Broech cemetery. Their names are as follows: William HASTINGS (might be 2 we aren't sure what is what here...one is William P HASTINGS. We don't know how this fits or where it goes. We have one that is 1778 - 1815. One is married to a Catherine, one to a Dianna JOHNSON, their oldest child Catherine HASTINGS married C.E. WHITMAN and lived in Oswego, NY, another daughter Clarinda married Jacob BUCKLEY and is buried in Oxford Cemetery, Lewis HASTINGS (my great great grandfather) was born in Chenango County 1833 and married an Anne BARTLE in 1851 (not sure if he moved from there before he married her).
I am drawing a blank as to where this line goes from here.. If you can provide any information I'd appreciate it greatly. Thanks.

I am in search of my family roots and have found a link, but my problem is finding any information to go further. I have found information about William P. HASTINGS / Diana JOHNSON who lived in Smithville Flats and according to my records they are buried in Wain Len Broech Cemetery. They had 7 children and I have documentation, dates and such on all of them, but no information on two of them. William P. HASTINGS is my Great, Great, Great Grandfather. His daughter Sarah Ann I can't find any information at all on and I can't seem to find any information that documents dates on William P. HASTINGS / Diana JOHNSON in the Smithville Flats area. And the most important thing is I can't seem to figure where to go from Smithville Flats for my search and who the parents of William P. might be. Betsy, I've been in touch with Christine again and she has sent me some information that I know you will be interested in re: Laurens and Bainbridge HOWLAND lines. Thanks to this great information line, I have found information on William P. HASTINGS and Diana Johnson (HASTINGS) MORGAN and in the process found a long lost distant cousin (two I believe) who have some information they are sending me. In the meantime, I still have some unanswered questions. I found Diana Johnson HASTINGS buried in Pennsylvania where most of my relatives ended up, but William P. HASTINGS I can't locate. My records show he is buried in Wain Len Broech Cemetary, 7 miles south of Oxford. Through my search I can't find a cemetery listing for this cemetery or any record of his death. I also learned of my great, great, great, great grandparents names and I found a bit on them, but am stuck again. His name is Stephen Sampson HASTINGS (1774 - 1854) I don't know his birthplace. His wife is Sarah (SQUIRES) HASTINGS she was born July 13, 1779 in Cornwall Litchfield Connecticut and married Stephen (I don't know where) and died on September 4, 1854 in Oxford New York. They came to Smithville Flats in 1810 as they are shown on the records on this site. After that I have no more information about their children or who Stephen's parents are. Sarah I managed to find her history back to 1400s to Scotland online, BUT it is missing the entire section on Sarah. I'd like to crack this case (as per to speak) and be able to help that line also. Thanks for your help.

Jean S. Barto Sun Feb 11 11:23:05 2001
I'm trying to find birth information on my paternal great-grandmother, Martha WELLS, who may have been born in Norwich or North Norwich in December, 1840. I'd like to verify her birth location, and the names of her parents and siblings. She married Lemuel STRATTON of Northfield, MA around 1859. She may have returned to Northfield/Gill, MA for the marriage, but could have also married in the Norwich area. A secondary source, "A Book of Strattons, Volume 2," lists the marriage location as Gill, MA, and the date of 1859, but that book may not be totally accurate.
It's possible that the WELLS family left Massachusetts for the Norwich, NY area in the 1830's, which could account for my inability to find Martha WELLS or her family in the Franklin County, MA records I've searched thus far (the 1850 census, which might have shown Martha WELLS as a child with her parents).
In any case, Lemuel STRATTON and Martha (WELLS) STRATTON lived in the Gill, MA area until 1865 or 1866, when they returned to New York State. They had 3 or 4 children in Massachusetts, I think. However, my grandfather, Henry Reuben STRATTON, was born in the Town of Norwich in 1868.
Lemuel STRATTON does show up as a farmer in the 1869-1870 directory that is online.
I have sent away to Albany for Martha (WELLS) STRATTON's death certificate (she died in 1921), but I have not gotten anything back yet. I hope someone can help with this, or suggest where else I should look to find out more about the birth of my great-grandmother!

Judi ROGERS GILKER Mon Feb 12 13:40:34 2001
Joseph W. LANE, according to his obituary was born abt. 1833 in Plymouth, NY. & his family were known to live in Springfield, IL from 1870 to 1878. He possibly worked for the railroad. His wife name was Abby (unknown maiden name) & they had 2 known children, Lizzie & Mary "Mamie" E. Joseph died October 5, 1905 in Hannibal, Mo, and his body was supposed to be returned to Springfield, IL. for burial in Oakridge Cemetery. The cemetery has no record of this. His wife Abby was born June 28, 1831 possibly in NH. and she died June 11, 1915 in Hannibal, Mo. and her boby was buried in Springfield, IL. also. Their daughter Lizzie married Edward S. DUNNING on April 29, 1891 in Hannibal, but later married W. R. HESSER and moved to Roanoke, VA. Their other daughter, Mary "Mamie" E. was still unmarried and living in Hannibal at the time of her mothers died, in 1915.
Joseph had a possible brother, William E. LANE who was born abt. mid 1830's. William married Elizabeth Caroline Gallaher Wardell ROGERS (x-wife of John M. Wardell ROGERS) in 1875.
William E. LANE was possibly employed by the railroad or was a Teamster. He died about 1899, probably in Hannibal, Marion Co., Mo.
Any information regarding any of these people would be greatly appreciated. I would be happy to share info. Thank you for your time.

I'm looking for any information on Francis Joseph FLYNN who lived in Greene, NY in the 1870's. He was a midget and later was called General Mite when he was exhibited as one of the smallest persons who ever lived. He was exhibited here and in Europe and was quite famous. We have information he was born Oct. 2, 1864 but we don't know where and we don't know where he is buried. He died in 1902. His father married Mary A. CASEY, of Oxford, NY, in 1871. The information is that he died in Cardiff, Wales, but there is no record there of his death. He was married to Millie EDWARDS and nothing is known of her either. In the marriage article it says Edward F. FLYNN is from Middletown. Later in a British census in 1881, he states he's from Pennsylvania. It's all a mystery.

Another is written by Mrs W A MANNING from Afton NY Aug 15, 1928. Phebe must have been dead by the time the MANNING letter was written because she talks about Auntie Phebe having had cancer.
